Probiotics: What are they?

June 11, 2018

The World Health Organization defines a probiotic as “a bacteria conferring a benefit to human health”.  Over the past decade, the use of probiotics as a means of promoting or maintaining digestive health has been increasingly appreciated, with probiotics for oral administration available in multiple forms or as an added ingredient in foods. In the digestive tract, probiotics are believed to have potential important roles in regulating digestion, intestinal motility, protection from potential pathogens. Recent progress in our understanding has led us to appreciate that they may even play a role in controlling events distant from the intestinal tract via the secretion of small molecules that may act on distant organs such as the brain to affect obesity or mood or cognitive disorders.

In the nose, the presence of a ‘healthy’ community of bacteria (the microbiome) are necessary to ensure normal function of the epithelial lining and coordinate inflammatory responses.  Diseases of the nose and sinuses, such as allergies or chronic sinusitis, are associated with the imbalance of the bacterial equilibrium and may contribute to disease.

Until recently, there have been no probiotics available for intranasal use. Fortunately, now ProbiorinseTM offers a novel treatment alternative to the nasal and sinus sufferer. ProbiorinseTM is unique in combining a the benefits of saline nasal irrigation with the addition of a probiotic bacteria. By incorporating freeze-dried probiotic Lactocccus lactis W136 to the convenient individual dose-packs of buffered saline mixture, fresh probiotic is reconstituted at the time of making of the solution, so that fresh probiotic rinse solution is used each time.
